Published in 1945, Gulf of Penas brings together eighteen stories set in the Patagonian plains, where the protagonists—ship captains, whales, schooners, seal hunters, among others—confront the solitude and grandeur of remote lands. In doing so, they reveal the most primitive essence of the human being in their struggle for survival, while also uncovering a primordial beauty, kindness, and love for nature.
